Product Owner, Data Governance

The Product Owner, Data Governance is responsible for understanding the needs of the Enterprise Data Governance community, translating those needs into product requirements for the (Collibra-based) data governance platform and working with the developers and testers to ensure the requirements are implemented successfully. This platform is the hub to allow the Data Governance community to manage  business and technical metadata, data lineage, data profiling, data quality assessment and reporting as well as issue tracking.  The candidate must have an ability to document requirements using process flow diagrams and related specification documents, write user stories and acceptance criteria and review test cases and design documents.

The Product Owner, Data Governance works independently with little to no guidance and is naturally inquisitive and adept in communication, elicitation, facilitation, and modeling techniques. Individuals demonstrate leadership in the business analysis discipline, mentor others, and apply their working knowledge of the company, industry, and/or business domain.


Provide product vision

Ensure that the Product Backlog is visible, transparent, clear to all, and shows what the Delivery Team will work on next

Impart an understanding of the product strategy to the team and collaborating with them to define the Minimum Viable Product

Ensure the Delivery Team understands the  product implications to the wider organization and client


Product Organizational Awareness and Alignment

Ensure collaboration across delivery team’s stakeholders

Identify and communicate cross-team implications and dependencies and escalate to product manager as appropriate

Ensure the product implications to the broader organization are addressed

Escalate to delivery team’s stakeholders where appropriate

Provide assurance that solution is evolving correctly

Ensure needed business resources and/or SME's who are outside of the delivery team are available

Invite and encourage stakeholders to attend sprint review sessions and other appropriate team meetings

Ensure the product implications to the wider organization are addressed (e.g.  Operations training, customer education and support, sales tools and training, marketing collateral, positioning in the marketplace, etc.)


Other Responsibies

Solicits requirements using individual or group interviewing as well as best practice research

Organize requirements into user stories, understanding dependencies and testing requirements

Capture detailed requirements specifications in standard formats

Work independently and with supervisory review on moderate to highly complex user requirements

Coordinates User Acceptance Testing of each release

Assist the business in determining if and how new systems or system enhancements may improve business processes and capabilities.

Identify and communicate risks and issues as well as possible solutions.


Candidate must possess:

  • 4 year college degree or equivalent experience
  • 7-10 years of related experience
  • Experience with business-level data and process modeling
  • Familiarity with data governance lifecycle and practices
  • Experience with Agile software development practices

Interpersonal skills:

  • Managing strategic product initiatives

  • Defining and delivering successful products that meet or exceed business objectives

  • Eliciting, communicating, and aligning stakeholder needs with product vision, strategy, and product roadmap

  • Evaluating emerging technologies and market trends

  • Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences

  • Strong decision making skills in a conflicting priority environment.

Preferred knowledge and skills:

  • Facility with Visio, MS Office tools
  • Comfortable with presenting to small-medium groups
  • Ability to listen for requirements, not just requests
  • Experience with Collibra or other Data Governance platform from a user or designer perspective is a plus.
