?This is a retail leadership role that combines sales, sales coaching, risk management, training, presentations/seminar delivery to improve sales force effectiveness and foster industry-leading asset gather and guidance product sales.  The success of this role is highly dependent on sales coaching skills/credibility and strong influencing and relationship-building skills.

A Guidance Sales Manager’s primary responsibility is to provide in-field training for TDA’s sales organization, supporting all of TD Ameritrade’s guidance offerings, tools and the overall client experience.  In addition to coaching, Guidance Sales Managers (GSMs) use the insights they have developed through their interactions with client-facing reps to produce and deliver training presentations and serve as sales subject matter experts on cross-functional teams focused on strategic business objectives such as new product development. The role will work in unison with retail Sales, Product, Risk Management, Compliance, Legal, and Learning & Development (L&D) leadership to devise and implement key Retail Distribution initiatives in areas of asset gathering and guidance sales.

As a business leader, this role is expected to assess situations, then communicate with, and solicit opinions from, business partners in order to arrive at well informed business decisions that are in line with our corporate vision and values.


  • Field interaction involves deriving insights from branch visits, huddles and discussions with branch, regional, and divisional management, then working with the applicable associates to create action plans based on those insights
  • GSM insights are documented and frequently reviewed with Branch Managers and shared with Regional Directors and Divisional Vice Presidents (DVPs), with whom the GSM is responsible for working to ensure Branch Manager accountability
  • In addition to deriving insights from the field, GSMs provide in-field coaching and one-to-many training on areas of Sales focus and key Product initiatives
  • In addition to scheduled interactions such as huddles, coaching, and branch visits, GSMs support ad-hoc requests for assistance and information from field reps and Sales management
  • GSMs use their discretion to determine which requests they need to respond to, and which can be directed to an associate who specializes in the area of inquiry
  • Prior to the beginning of the quarter, GSMs deliver quarterly training plans to their respective DVPs (and share the plans with GSM manager). By the start of the quarter, GSMs and DVPs agree on a finalized training plan for each division
  • GSMs create the content described in their quarterly training plans, producing elements such as speaking notes, presentation outlines and slides where necessary
  • GSMs obtain Compliance and Supervision for the one-to-many training they develop
  • When requested, GSMs partner with L&D to contribute to development and delivery of training content
  • GSMs will be called upon to share their knowledge of field happenings with other functional groups within TDA, in the form of recurring cross-functional meetings and presentations, or responding to one-off requests for information that might arise (i.e. gathering field input on the RIA Client Questionnaire process, assisting in arranging a panel discussion on the Amerivest Fee Rebate)
  • GSMs promote a collaborative team environment, supporting one another in sharing findings derived from field visits within their division, assisting in development of training content, and working together during team huddles and brainstorming sessions
  • GSMs document their activities in a timely manner, regularly meeting deadlines for submission of certain deliverables


  • ?Aptitude and experience with sales and service training delivery within the financial services industry
  • Client or wholesale sales experience including territory management, time management, and working on the road while continuing to drive support and projects.
  • Subject matter expert in investment products and advisory services
  • Strong presentation skills for individual, small group, and large seminar audiences
  • Ability to create and deliver training materials and presentations
  • Familiarity with retail brokerage compliance and risk management issues preferred
  • Experience driving business strategy and change management initiatives, preferably within the financial services business
  • Strong relationship building, communication, strategic thinking, and influencing abilities
  • Project management experience a plus
  • Series 7 and 63
  • 60-70% travel
  • Military education or experience may be considered in lieu of requirements above
